We demonstrate, through finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations, that near-field coupling in ordered 2D nanoarrays of gold nanoparticles can mitigate thermal losses. By comparing the electric field intensities inside the gold nanorods with those in the interparticle gaps and with the optical far-field spectra, we show that absorption is reduced for small gaps due to charge screening, despite high near-field intensities in the gaps. The data here corresponds to the electric-field-intensity profile along the long axis of the nanorod for longitudinal polarisation, and to the far-field optical data for different nanorod heights and gap values.
