Do photons travel in straight lines ? (and other such questions we should probably not ask)

We learned that rays of light in free space travel in straight lines. Do photons follow these lines? Or do they follow the energy-flow lines that are not necessarily straight?

I will discuss  what we have learned from Sir Michael Berry about these issues, and even present results from some simple experiments by us and others that elucidate some of these points.
