Edge states in micropillar photonic lattices

Surface states are a fundamental property of finite size crystals. They play an important role in the electronic transport and in the magnetic properties of low- dimensional materials. Their existence has long been related to the microscopic details of the edge of the crystal.
Recent advances in the study of topological physics have revealed that, for topologically nontrivial materials, the existence of surface states is directly related to the properties of the bulk. Here we use a photonic simulator made out of coupled semiconductor micropillars to experimentally study the topological properties of surface states in a honeycomb lattice and in a 1D Fibonacci quasi-crystal.
The inter-particle interactions inherent to our structures, in the strong-coupling regime, open new avenues to study the nonlinear properties of topological edge states.
